Common Cold & Upper Respiratory Infection tips

The transition from Winter to Spring can sometimes throw our bodies off guard- the weather shifts, we start dressing and eating differently, plants awaken from their Winter slumber and expose us to different pollens in the air. Here are some tips from Malik Cotter on how to take good care of your immune system.

Lifestyle & Diet

Basic lifestyle tips: Maintain proper hygiene. Drink plenty of fluids. Get a good balance of rest and movement.

Diet: Do not consume refined sugars. An excellent food while “under the weather” – miso soup with ginger, garlic, scallions. Medicinal mushrooms have wonderful benefits on the immune system, especially maitake, shiitake, and reishi.

Recommended supplements:

These supplements will give your body the basic nutrients to keep your immune system in tip-top shape.
  • Vitamin C
  • Zinc (lozenges work great)
  • L-Lysine (with vitamin B-6 and Vitamin C)
  • N.A.C.
  • Multi-vitamin & mineral
  • Colloidal silver
  • A multi-strain probiotic

Herbal support:

Use herbal expectorants for phlegm and congestion. Hyssop, Mullein, and Wild Cherry Bark are all wonderful herbs to use for cough and congestion.

Powerful herbs for immune support:

  • Echinacea
  • Goldenseal
  • Garlic
  • Olive leaf
  • Astragalus
  • Elderberry
  • Cat's Claw
  • Boneset

Essential Oils:

Add a drop of tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil in warm water and gargle to alleviate a sore throat.

For opening congested airways, use Eucalyptus oil or White Flower oil- apply to the chest and back.

Chinese Medicine:

Chuan Xin Lian is a Chinese formula that is useful for sore throat, clears mucus. Gan Mao Ling is another Chinese formula that translates to "common cold cure" and can be used as a preventative.

Employee Spotlight

Our employees are the heart of the Dragon's Den Herb Shop. We are known for our commitment to serving the community for their health and wellness needs. Each of our workers is either licensed, certified, or in progress of advancing their education in the field of health and wellness.

Today we'd like to feature one of our employees, Zach Kaufher, for his dedication and service to our Dragon's Den community!
Zach began his professional career in the health and wellness field when he interned with Herb Pharm in 1997 – there he learned how to cultivate, harvest, process and use Western medicinal herbs. He was a part of the first domestic planting of Goldenseal (a threatened species). Zach continued to work on herbal medicine farms after his experience with Herb Pharm.

4 years later at the age of 23, Zach did a 10-day "silent sit" and heard the call to pursue bodywork as a profession. He was also inspired by his father.

Since then, Zach has provided body work as a private practice Licensed Massage Therapist for 20+ years. Because of his extensive herbal experience, he is also able to offer his herbal knowledge to his massage clients.

Zach loves working with the community and the Dragon's Den team, which he has been a part of since 2020. He is continuously learning and loves to learn.

He aspires to share a variety of herbal insights to his community, including areas such as the nervous system, digestion, immune support, inflammation, and more.

Zach is currently in process of becoming a certified somatic grieving facilitator with the organization, Center for Somatic Grieving. This process helps people integrate grief using meditation, movement, journaling, and group support.

In his free time, he enjoys listening to lots of different music and spends as much time in nature as he can.

If interested in working with Zach, you can contact him via email at zacharykaufher@gmail.com.
