Dragon's Den Newsletter: Adaptogens, Chinese formulas, and more!

The Season of Gratitude

For over 36 years here on the beautiful island of Maui, the Dragon's Den has been more than just a store to find herbal remedies, healthcare products, and special gifts — it has served and supported those looking for balance and ways to heal from health challenges, to learn the way of herbs, to live in harmony with nature, and hopefully, realize one’s true self.

Thanksgiving reminds us that the energy of gratitude is transformative. It weaves connections with all of life, encouraging us to live our truth with humility, and uplifting for all of us.

Your support over the years has allowed us to be a hub for healing, a source of knowledge, and a place to share the wisdom of herbs and traditional and modern health modalities that encourage the body, mind, and spirit to be alive and thrive.

We are deeply honored to walk this path with you. Thank you for being part of our journey, and letting us be part of yours.
We all have so much to be grateful for, so very much!

Product Spotlight: Adaptogen Tea

Adaptogen herbs

Adaptogens are plants and fungi that help the body adapt to stress, restore balance, and build resilience. They support adrenal health, regulate cortisol, boost energy, enhance immunity, and improve mental clarity without overstimulation. Known for balancing hormones, improving sleep, and aiding recovery, adaptogens offer a natural way to optimize vitality and well-being.

Adaptogen Herbal Tea Recipe (available at the Dragon's Den)
  • 30 g. Astragalus root:  tonifies Qi, boosts immunity, and strengthen vitality
  • 20 g. Reishi Mushroom: calms the spirit, strengthens immunity, and supports longevity
  • 15 g. Siberian Ginseng: supports stamina, resilience to stress, and mental clarity
  • 9 g. American Ginseng: nourishes Yin, calms stress, and restores energy gently
  • 6 g. Asian Red Ginseng: invigorates Qi, enhances circulation, and combats fatigue
  • 15 g. He Shou Wu nourishes blood, kidney essence, and promotes hair growth and overall vitality
  • 12 g. Goji berries: nourishes blood, supports vision, and improves overall vitality
  • 6 g. Licorice root: harmonizes the formula, supports digestion, and balances the flavor
  • 6 g. Fresh Ginger: warms digestion and enhances absorption of other herbs)
Brewing Instructions:
Place herbs in a large pot with 8 cups of water. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Simmer the herbs for 45–60 minutes. Strain the tea into a mug or thermos, pressing the herbs to extract as much liquid as possible.
Or, alternatively, you can use a crock pot. Fill with water, simmer for an hour or so, drink, replacing water which has been drank as a tea brew, continue to cook. Turn off the pot at night. Can last a week or longer.

Dosage: Drink 1–2 cups daily for adaptogenic support. The remaining tea can be refrigerated and reheated for up to 3 days. The used herbs can be simmered one more time for a milder second batch.

Buyer Beware! A Word to The Wise.

In our last Newsletter, I cautioned everyone about counterfeit products available for purchase online. My recommendation was to do your research and ensure that you’re buying what you intend.

This time I’d like to share that Mega-Corporations are buying out companies that we’ve trusted for years to deliver good, wholesome, and organic supplements. I watched this happen over the years, witnessing ingredient quality go down and prices go up.

Here are a few of the buyouts that have occurred:
  • Nestle now owns Garden of Life, Pure Encapsulation, Wobenzym, and Douglas Labs.
  • Proctor and Gamble now own New Chapter.
  • Alticor owns Metagenics
  • Pfizer owns Emergen-C and Centrum.
  • Kikkoman owns Country Life.
  • Schwabe now owns Nature’s Way, Enzymatic Therapy, and Integrative Therapeutics.
  • HGGC owns Solaray and KAL. And the list goes on.

The takeaway is that the consumer and the selling store both need to do their homework.

Please be aware of who and what you are supporting with your buying power. If you are looking for quality ingredients from conscious, environmentally friendly companies, do your homework. Particularly be watchful for counterfeit products online.
