Autumn through the Lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Autumn through the Lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine

The autumn season focuses on refining, conserving energy, and letting go of what is no longer needed—like nature in shedding its leaves. The lungs are particularly vulnerable to dryness in autumn, which can lead to respiratory issues and skin dryness.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Recommendations
  • Eat Lung Moistening Foods: Apples, pears, almonds, carrots, white mushrooms, and other foods that nourish the lungs.
  • Do Breath Practice: Deep, slow breathing is emphasized to nourish the lungs, improve respiratory health, and clear stagnant energy. Inhaling deeply and exhaling fully releases stuck emotions and stagnant Qi while strengthening lung capacity.
  • Stay Warm: Wear layers and avoid exposure to cold to protect the lungs.
  • Energetic Aspect - Consolidate and Let It Go: Do meditative practices on “letting go” and other techniques, such as visualizing exhaling grief, sadness, or other downside emotions. Align with autumn’s energy of releasing whatever no longer serves you or the greater good.
Autumn Qigong practice
- Standing Posture (Zhan Zhuang): Promote the flow of Qi through the lungs and large intestine meridians, emphasizing grounding and connection to the earth.

- Eight Pieces of Brocade (Ba Duan Jin): In this classic Qi Gong set, the posture, "Double Hands Hold Up the Heavens" is specifically for lung health, stretching the upper body and encouraging deep breathing.

Clinical Pearls

Use these wellness tips to stay healthy this fall season.

Lung Tonic Tea: A Blend of primarily Western herbs to nourish the lungs. Mullein. coltsfoot, nettles, ginger, osha root, and a few other herbs to assist lung function.

Lung Tonic Soup: A Chinese herbal blend to assist in healing lung conditions. Use as a soup stock or drink as a tea. This soup blend contains Astragalus, Codonopsis, Angelica and other Chinese herbs.

Before a sauna take activated charcoal capsules to bind up the toxins released so they bypass the blood, and after the sauna take minerals to replace those minerals that have been sweated out. A pinch of good salt will help replenish some of the lost minerals. Option to take a broad-spectrum mineral supplement afterwards.

Acupressure point prescription to build the Immune system: Start with Stomach 36, move to Spleen 6, then to Lung 7, Large Intestine 4, Large Intestine 11, ending with Ren 6. Use light to moderate finger pressure, going clockwise to tonify and counterclockwise to sedate, or use sparrow pecking moxa if the condition is cold and weak.

Cold and Flu Season remedy: Keep a bottle of Chinese herbal formula Gan Mao Ling tablets on hand for optimal health during cold and flu season. Works best when taken at the first sign of unwellness.

Buyer Beware! and A Word to the Wise.

After being in the healthcare profession and owning an herb and nutraceutical business for over 45 years, I have seen a lot, done a lot, and watched many products come and go. What I want to do is to give you fair warning that everything you may see on Amazon or other websites or even in your favorite store where you purchase your health supplies, may not be what it says it is.

There are so many counterfeit products on the market, products that contain only a trace amount of what it says, or products that don’t tell you truthfully what’s in it.

Supplements are far less regulated than pharmaceutical medicines so beware. Look for large reputable companies that have a good reputation. Usually less expensive products don’t carry what you may be looking for in a supplement.
Shy away from products labeled ‘Natural’ or ‘Proprietary Blend’ or have words on the label that you don’t understand. There are over 80 different names for MSG, How’s that! We all know that scamming has ramped up, and the health supply industry is not immune. They want your dollar. Do your homework! It would serve you best to vet any product you may be considering purchasing.

Ask to see a Certificate of Analysis, it should tell you about any microbial growth, heavy metal content, or mold. Ask how long the product has been sitting in a warehouse, and check expiration dates.

At the Dragon’s Den, we search for third-party testing for many of our health supplies, carry only USP and GMP products, focus on buying only organic or wildcrafted products, and try our darndest to get locally made products whenever possible. We do the research for you and us!
